Quite possibly.  This is more a problem in places that employ clueful 
people, which tend to be the smaller shops.  People do their research 
there and end up buying elsewhere.

If you can get a big box retailer's sales assistant to say the machine 
supports Linux (and if they work on commission they probably will say 
anything to make a sale) you can return it if it doesn't work.
