Tony,

You'll need to check the proxy server settings for gaim in two places:

1. Tools -> Preferences, then click on the Network tab
2. Accounts ->  <account name> (MSN) -> Edit Account, then click on the
advanced tab.

Make sure that the proxy settings are correct for your network. Or
perhaps try connecting without any proxy at all.
