I'd say it's unlikely to get worse... I don't know why it's occurring or
how to make it work, but you can stop the little error message from
appearing.
After you've logged in, go to System > Administration > Login Window.
Change the "Style" popup menu from "Themed" to "Plain".

Do other sounds work on your system? Under System > Preferences > Sound,
is "Enable Software Sound Mixing" turned on?

This happens on my system too - I always thought that's how it was meant
to work?
