BitTorrent client seems way out of date.

I seem to remember reading that there are licensing issues with the later
bittorrent client versions.

Is the only reference to this I can find at short notice :)

There are alternatives. It depends what you like and need. The rtorrent
command line client can be tweaked to be very efficient, but configuring it
is rather unintuitive. There is also ktorrent if you prefer qt / KDE style
apps, which has a nice GUI and is liked by many. It's also possible to
compile your own "Transmission" client from source, if you feel OK about
doing that.

I get the best results from Azureus and rtorrent - but rtorrent requires
some googling and editing files to get it working well ( as in, your Aunt
Tilly would not enjoy it)

Everyone seems to think Azureus is a resource hog, but really java is the
culprit. If you have a reasonable amount of RAM and configure it well, it
only chews CPU if you leave the GUI running and visible. Leaving it in the
notification area/ system tray , it only uses a few percent CPU while
seeding, and no more than rtorrent downloading ( with both properly
configured). "YMMV" as they say...
