My Toshiba laptop works OK for Ubuntu Fiesty, but the really important
things like screen dimming on battery and the Fn + blah keys don't
work and it is a fundamental floor with a lot of Toshiba laptops and
the BIOS that they support (from what I could tell).

I too am looking at a new laptop and like the look of the Dell XPS
1330m. According to a page I have been following on the wiki
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/InstallingUbuntuOnADellXPSM1330) it seems
like it will be well supported once gutsy comes out.

HTH's,
