Hi James,

I had a look through your logs. I don't think your issue is related to the bug
you pointed out, because your HDD is being seen as a SATA/SCSI device -

[ 19.188000] scsi 0:0:0:0: Direct-Access ATA Hitachi HTS54161 SBDO
PQ: 0 ANSI: 5
[ 19.196000] SCSI device sda: 234441648 512-byte hdwr sectors (120034 MB)

and that bug is about SATA disks incorrectly coming under the control of the
old IDE/PATA driver after a kernel update.

Trouble is, your DVD drive doesn't seem to be getting seen at all. There's no
mention of anything which would be related to it in any of the info you
provided.

Which could mean a few things -

1. These might seem obvious, but is the drive at least still getting power?
Can you open and close the tray? Is it still physically connected to the
motherboard?

2. Do you have any USB storage devices (flash, external HDD, card reader etc.)
plugged in when you power up? If so, try unplugging them before turning your
machine on, and see if your DVD works (although I would expect some message
about a conflict if this was the case).

3. A possible bug or incompatibility in libata (the new storage driver) which
affects your type of machine (based on Intel ICH8, which is still new). If
so, and it's been fixed in the meantime, you might need to run a custom
kernel to get around it, at least until the release of Gutsy.

Some more info (which I should have asked for before) - what's the exact make
and model of both the laptop and the DVD drive?

Cheers,
Les
