I have installed the synce-kde package. I have set up a panel icon to
start 'raki'. When started an icon appears on the panel, and has an
attached menu. But when I plug the PocketPC into the USB it doesn't
connect. :(

The PocketPC does try, but fails to connect.

There is a vdccm program in /usr/bin.
Also a number of 'synce-' programs.

dmesg says "usb 1-2: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0"

Regards Neil.
