Hi there smithveg,

Have a look at the following release notice for the latest release of
Ubuntu (yesterday).
http://www.ubuntu.com/news/610released

In particular, it says..

The desktop version introduces a host of new features, an improved
interface and a wide variety of new applications and desktop tools
making Ubuntu 6.10 flexible and user-friendly. Enhancements include:
 ...
 * Proactive security features, preventing many common security
vulnerabilities even before they are discovered
 ...

While we can't make the claim that thee are no virii or spyware
infections for Ubuntu, you will find that the risk is almost zero, and
our software developers and testers are serious about not introducing
any security holes into the system, and fixing any that are found as
quickly as possible. This is even build into the design of the system
from the very beginning.
