Ubuntu is just an aggregate of Free Software. That software runs fine on an
old school 266MHz machine -- as long as it has enough RAM (the crucial point
in my previous email). You can also choose alternative software among what
Ubuntu provides -- importantly, your browser and office suite.

Choosing another distribution just gets you a different subset from the same
set of software by default.
