Bigpond uses DHCP as far as I know, in which case you didn't need to
transfer all those options to Ubuntu, and your IP address is probably
dynamic as well meaning that setting the IP address manually WILL cause
problems. You should set your Ubuntu options to use DHCP, then it will
get IP address, DNS server etc automatically.

Has Bigpond dropped their heartbeat system yet does anyone know? There
were talks that they would take Optus' lead and use the MAC address of
the Modem to identify itself. If that is the case you don't need to
login using your account number etc
If they haven't dropped it yet you can probably use bpalogin to identify
yourself (I haven't used it personally, I just searched for 'bigpond' in
synaptic.)
Install it using:
'sudo apt-get install bpalogin'
