I apologize if I made it sound like I didn't think this was an important issue. You have to. There's simply far too many laptops out there that cannot accomodate any better than 8-bit depths. Ditto for a lot of legacy hardware that is the only thing that Ubuntu users in some less priviledged countries can afford or that they are given by charities from more priviledged countries.
