In KMS-powered pieces (disk check, encrypted disk, initial splash
screen) we're limited to the use of simple gradients (vertical,
horizontal) or solid colors (full color palette is available, not only
256 like in the current Usplash implementation). We can also render text
properly using the default system font.
The new splash screen and os-switcher will run on top of X server so
there are no limitations as far a colors or fonts are concerned.
