Actually, since it would be hosted by Canonical as opposed to Gnome, this would not be a fork. Gnome gets used by many distros, but only Canonical would want to control their unique user experience. Therefore it would only be appropriate for such a feature to be Ubuntu-specific, i.e. down-stream.
