Going triangular is a clever way to minimise the number elements.
Obviously a good thing for the smaller sizes.

But it is hard to work out how the lines should flow and where they
should cross. I think your lines flatten out too much to the sides.
Here having a look at a IcoSphere in Blender should help.

Overlaying 2 grids as in your 3rd version simply asks for trouble ;)
