[ubuntu-art] Graphic Design

Hello all,
	I've been doing a lot of nay-saying with the current state of Human,
but I have been doing very little about it.  I am interested in getting
started on some basic graphic design.  Perhaps I can contribute more for
edgy or edgy+1.  Could anyone recommend a online guide or book?  What
programs would you recommend?  Programming with always take precedence
over art for me, but I want to be more versatile.  Thanks for your time.
