I have it working with 256 colors on i386/amd64, but since I don't have
a ppc, I can't implement it for ppc yet (anyone in holland with a ppc
machine that I could borrow for a while?).

I'm now working on a POC theme that could be a drop-in replacement for
the current usplash with a better looking progress bar to test the new
usplash's abilities.
