Explanation of the Ubuntu delta and why it can be dropped:
Debian has fixed FTBFS with binutils-gold and improve packaging.

Changelog entries since current natty version 1.2-2ubuntu1:

vite (1.2-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * rules: Replace rules with mere dh.
  * control: Build-depend on debhelper >= 7.0.50 to get dh.
  * source/format: Switch to 3.0 (quilt) format.
  * patches/gold-fix.diff: Fix link failure with gold.
