James, good question. Only 2.2.9-0ubuntu1 can be backported to Jaunty, I
filled that request hoping it would have enough users reporting it
worked before -0ubuntu2 got uploaded.

Gnucash 2.2.9-0ubuntu2 and upwards have been patched to build against libgoffice-0-8, which is only in Karmic. See changelog:

If it's possible to backport 2.2.9-0ubuntu1, please go ahead, it has worthwhile improvements. If not, it's better not to try, since later releases will probably fail to build.
