The reality is that KDar is unmaintained. That is the real problem. If
you could do something to fix it, great! Otherwise, let it broken and
uninstallable was of no help to anyone and I think it would be even more
annoying (why ship a package that is broken and unmaintained?).

Someone said that KDar could be kept around for a while as long as
someone volunteered to package and maintain libdar3c2a. First, that
person is nowhere to be seen. Second, upstream DAR is not maintaining
that library anymore, so any security issues would need to be tracked
and fixed by the packager.

I am sure Ubuntu would love to support as much software as possible but
their time/resources are limited, so it is better to focus on software
that is maintained upstream or that has a very dedicated packager
behind. I was myself a heavy user of KDar. Unfortunately, I don't have
the money to convince the developer of KDar to release a new version and
I don't have the available time to try to do it myself. If you really
love KDar and you think that there are more users like you, then build a
community around it and try to boost its development (or a least make it
build with a recent version of DAR). As long as there are people
*really* interested, nothing can stop them from do it. That is the
beauty of free software.
