Buscando un poco más, es cierto, es posible tener S.M.A.R.T. por USB,
pero depende del disco:

"Depending on the type of interface being used, some
S.M.A.R.T.-enabled motherboards and related software may not
communicate with certain S.M.A.R.T.-capable drives. For example, few
external drives connected via USB and Firewire correctly send
S.M.A.R.T. data over those interfaces."[1]

"Devices such as USB external disk enclosures translate incoming (from
the host) SCSI commands to their ATA equivalents and process responses
as required. This translation is limited typically to a small number
of SCSI commands (e.g. READ and WRITE) but not those commands needed
by smartmontools. The author does not know of any SCSI_over_USB
devices that support Smartmontools. The 3ware RAID (6000, 7000, 8000
and 9000 series Escalade) controllers are supported on several
operating systems with special code." [2]

Sin embargo y para agregar confusión, ahora que recuerdo, hace poquito
enchufé un disco WD Passport y Gnome me dijo que estaba por morirse
según su estado S.M.A.R.T.

O sea, depende del disco.
