El otro dia estuve leyendo las instrucciones para usar pop y smtp de Gmail
desde un programa cliente y vi que sus nombres correctos son
pop.googlemail.com <http://pop3.googlemail.com/> y smtp.googlemail.com.

Ademas, para poder usar el servicio tenes que validar usuario en el servidor
pop3 habiendo habilitado SSL  Si vas a usar el smtp, primero validar contra
el pop3 para luego enviar mensajes.

Te copio una parte del instructivo que han publicado para Outlook 2003, como
para que te des una idea y veas si el error no viene por ese lado.


   1. Fill in all necessary fields to include the following information:

   *User Information*
   *Your Name:* Enter your name as you would like it to appear in the *
   From:* field of outgoing messages.
   *Email Address:* Enter your full Google Mail email address (*
   username at googlemail.com*)

   *Server Information*
   *Incoming mail server (POP3):* pop.googlemail.com
   *Outgoing mail server (SMTP):* smtp.googlemail.com

   *Login Information*
   *User Name:* Enter your Google Mail username (including *@
   googlemail.com*)
   *Password:* Enter your Google Mail password


    2. Click *More Settings...* and then click the *Outgoing Server* tab.

   3. Tick the box next to *My outgoing server (SMTP) requires
   authentication* and select *Use same settings as my incoming mail
   server.*


   4. Click the *Advanced* tab and tick the box next to *This server
   requires an encrypted connection (SSL)* under *Incoming Server (POP3).
   *


   5. Tick the box next to *This server requires an encrypted connection
   (SSL)* under *Outgoing Server (SMTP)* and enter 465 in the *Outgoing
   server (SMTP) *box.
