Estuve viendo la p?gina y requiere Python instalado. Como entiendo que 
usas Ubuntu eso no ser?a un problema. Por lo dem?s: si dec?s que 
descomprimiste, entiendo que bajaste el tar.gz y no el rpm.
Las instrucciones de la p?gina son estas (todo se teclea en la terminal 
-la podes abrir en Aplicaciones->Accesorios->Terminal):

    *
      /Download the source code package:
      GraphiteOne source code package
      
/
      / /
    * / /
      /Extract the package in a directory of your choice.
      tar -xzvf graphiteone-1.3-1.tar.gz/
      / /
    * / /
      */Compile libraries and generate RPM packages. Please run 
"./build
      --help" in the gonelibs directory for available build options and
      prerequisites:
      cd graphiteone-1.3-1/gonelibs
      ./build.sh --mode=compile
      ./build.sh --mode=package/*
      */ /*
    * */ /*
      */Install RPM packages
      cd ../dist/packages
      rpm -ihv graphiteone-libs-1.3-1.rpm
      rpm -ihv graphiteone-kde-1.3-1.rpm/*

*/Note that this will only install the system dependent libraries.

Ubuntu tiene, por lo menos el m?o, rpm para instalar paquetes as? que 
yo 
te dir?a que sigas las instrucciones al pie de la letra y si te topas 
con un error insalvable lo env?es y entre todos los vemos.

Ahora ya s? donde teclear las instrucciones, una pregunta m?s, adonde puedo encontrar un archivo sobre sintaxis para esta terminal? ( esto es Phyton?)

Python es un lenguaje de programaci?n, podes usarlo en la terminal pero 
solo para ejecutar programas o guiones del propio python.
Si lo que vos quer?s es conocer los comandos linux que existen para que 
puedas usar en la terminal, te cuento que internet esta lleno de p?ginas 
para consultar porque hay much?simos comandos para distintas cosas.
Esta es una p?gina que podes consultar, por ejemplo: 
http://linuxcommand.org/learning_the_shell.php con algunos comandos. 
Tambi?n podes ejecutar el comando /man/ seguido del comando que quieras 
utilizar para obtener una explicaci?n sobre el comando y sus opciones.
Ejemplo:
/mariano at mishima:/$ man ls/
te va a traer las opciones del comando *ls*.

Si alguien m?s conoce un buen recurso de consulta sobre comandos de 
linux, por favor que lo provea as? nuestro amigo tiene para leer y guiarse.
