Looks to me like a compositor error pretty definitely.  The view isn't
broken (it would tell you so or crash).  Black is the automatic background
color when you have a Window that is "transparent", so there's my guess.  I
know you say you checked for 3d support, but it's really what it looks like
(an empty main widget would be very small, not that size and would have a
title bar).
