sound with h d m i

I am using ubuntu 20.4 with a usb sound card and headphones.
I would like to start using my television with its h d m i connection for sound.
I must keep my tower connected to the television because otherwise ubuntu will not work without a monitor.
But when going in to sound settings, and switching to h d m i, then I hear nothing.
Right away I use up arrow so I may get back to u s b.
Since I am a total, I would be in bad shape if I would not hear orca.
