I think the HD is going out, so I got another.
Now I'm having problems getting it to boot at all, even though the installer 
says it is installing to /dev/sda1.
This computer is a pain in the ass, I wish I would not have offered to work 
on it for this friend.

Did that machine previously have a Linux install of any kind present on the 
HD? If so, did you completely format the hard drive before installing?

I've seen weird problems where audio wouldn't work properly in some 
instances when overriding a previous installation that was not completely 
formatted.
