no login sound in 12.04

Leaving the drums on as an accessibility aid?  Now, that's ironic! 
After installing to my hard drive, I had the drums once, never to 
return.  Furthermore, lightdm no longer talks, no matter how often I 
mash 'ctrl+s' on the login screen.
