Hi,
You need to install something like Speakup or Yasr, which are screen
review programs for the console. Speakup is definitely in an advanced
stage and works quite well, and installing this is pretty easy in
Karmic. Look at
http://stormdragon.us
and there's an article called Speakup Revisited
this gives instructions for installing in Karmic.
