what should I use, alsa or pulseaudio?

Hi all,
When I installed ubuntu 9.04, I had serious performance problems with 
Orca. Later I discovered that the problems were not related to the orca, 
but with  pulseaudio. The problems disappeared as soon as I remove 
pulseaudio from my machine.
If I decide to use alsa in ubuntu 9.10, what should I do?
Is there any recommendation for users of the orca in 9:10 with respect 
to this topic?
