Zooming in X and Jaunty

Hello,

X provides great ability - independent setting of desktop size and 
screen resolution. When set appropriately, it results in great screen 
magnification without any perfomance tradeoffs. X even provides 
shortcuts for changing screen resolution without changing the desktop 
size - Ctrl-Alt-Greyplus and Ctr.-Alt-GreyMinus. Unfortunately, they 
don't seem to work in Jaunty.

My questions:

1. How to enable Ctrl-Alt-Plus/Minus shortcuts both in free and 
prorpieraty drivers (NVidia/ATI)?

2. Could someone write an applet for independent setting of desktop size 
and screen resolution?

And BTW, what about utilizing this X ability in screen magnifiers, so 
that they could work much more smoothly?
