system sounds

Hi all, I'm happy to say, I have hardy alpha 6 up and running for the
most part.  I just have one problem that's kind of bugging me, and I was
just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue.  Prior to
receiving my updates on Thursday night, I had system sounds, at least
the noise when I log into gnome.  I now have no system sounds.  I am
really questioning whether I have pulseaudio working right, as I had to
set my outputmethod to alsa for speech-dispatcher to work properly.  If
anyone has any suggestions for getting system sounds back, and/or
testing pulseaudio to make sure it's working right, I would greatly
appreciate the feedback.  Thanks much in advance for the help.
