orca not recognising my sound card?

Hello all,
I am attempting to run ubuntu 6.10 from the live cd. upon starting up normally, my sound card works fine, but when I attempt to use orca, no joy.
There are no error messages and enable speech is checked.
I have a real tech high definition audio card. that is all that shows up in windows device manager. I do not know how to force ubuntu to realise I have a sound card and let orca start speaking. Volume was at maximum, so that wasn't the issue.
Any help is appreciated.
Cordially,
Taylor
