I've just had a thought about why this is occurring. Espeak that will ship in gutsy final will 
use portaudio v18 again, as portaudio v19 was giving troubles. V18 only uses oss, and since you 
are running speech-dispatcher, portaudio v18 cannot talk to the oss device, as speech-dispatcher 
is running. You will need to stop speech-dispatcher to use espeak with the gnome-speech driver.
