menu problems

It kind of sounds like you (or someone else) may have somehow
accidentally dragged the panel with your menus (your top panel) to
either the left or right side of your screen so that it is running
vertically instead of horizontally. You can find this out if you use
the up and down arrows to go to the different menus (Applications,
Places, System) where the left and right arrows would normally have done
this. If it works, then your top panel was moved to either the left or
the right side of your screen.
I'm not sure how to fix this with the keyboard, but all one has to do is
hold down the left mouse button in a blank area of the panel with the
menus and drag ti back to the top of your screen.
