Fawn, AND IT HAS SPEECH ORCA!! It is an April 2007 release of Ubuntu.
From the site:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Accessibility?action=show&redirect=Accessibility%2Fdoc%2FGuide
The most common accessibility tools such as Orca and onBoard are
preinstalled on any standard Ubuntu system and are easy to activate. The
screen reader, magnifier and on-screen keyboard are all activated using
the Gnome Assistive Technology Preferences panel, Found in the System
Menu under Preferences.

I've got Ubuntu running on my home machine-- it's basically a white
box that I purchased from Microworx. But I agree-- I'm thinking about
buying a new machine and at this point, I'm focusing on Dell because
they have the right combination of price and trustworthiness.
I have a 64 bit AMD on my Microworx machine but have never been able to
install 64 bit Ubuntu-- I'm running (and have since dapper) 32 bit. I'm
hoping that by buying from Dell, you're guaranteed that *everything*
will work.
Thanks!

The site for Ubuntu Guide is great.
I just ordered a Dell Laptop with Ubuntu, so will need it I'm sure;
especially as I hope to get emac speech on it!
I gave up trying to get Ubuntu Linux on my computers, so will devote the
new one solely to it.Will

I feel silly, because I just discovered the unofficial Ubuntu guide. But
I'm not sure it has been discussed here, so if anyone else is unaware of
its existence, here's what it has to say about Codecs:

Maybe not as *easy* as Automatix but I think it covers most or all of
the bases.
Thanks!
