Hi Mike:

Unfortunately, the gnome-about panel has issues.  We're tracking them 
via these bugs:

If you are looking for the GNOME version that is installed, you can type 
"gnome-about --version" in a terminal:

wwalker at wwalker-laptop:~$ gnome-about --version
GNOME gnome-about 2.18.0
