gnopernicus/speech unavailable

Hi,
Gnopernicus in Ubuntu 6.05 worked fairly well for me, sometimes dropping
out, but logging out and back in started it again. After upgrading to
Ubuntu 6.10, the speech is "unavailable". I have two friends who are
blind that are interested in using this format, but I can't seem to beat
the system.  I'm a newbie to Linux, so be gentle!! I am fairly familiar
with JAWS in Windoze.
