screen reader

Hi, I am a blind computer user.
I got the live cd and it sounds like what I need.
The problem I have is I can't get the screen reader to work.
My daughter says a message that says speech unavailable comes up.
The sound card works because she was able to play a cd.
I tried to get the live dvd,
but only got a very small iso file that took about two seconds to download.
I would appreciate any help you can give me.
