I've not encountered this particular problem (anyone else?). The known
issues is that gnopernicus sometimes fails to start on first boot of the
Live CD (logging out and back in fixes that) and that it simply works
poorly with some applications. -- Yes, 6.06 is the latest version,
released officially today :)

Unfortunately none of the install CDs (desktop or alternate) allow for
an independent install for blind users at the moment. We hope to get it
working for both versions for the next release though (due out in October).

If you have a spare hard drive or partition I would recommend that you
try installing 6.06 (with some help) because the assistive technology
features are known to work better on an installed system.

An installed version will also give you the opportunity to try the next
generation screen reader, named Orca (ref: http://live.gnome.org/Orca),
which promises to be very powerful. We are likely to use that as
standard for our next release.

You might also want to try Oralux, which is a specialised distribution
for speech and braille output: http://oralux.org
