I would suggest having a read of http://live.gnome.org/Orca. On that page you should find enough information to get you started, including links to audio tutorials.

Yes Orca is bundled with Ubuntu, so much so that you can even use it to help you install Ubuntu if you wish. You can find more information on the page I linked you to above.
