The workaround for this problem has been provided on the Ubuntu
accessibility mailing list:

Essentially, the workaround consist of adding the following lines to
/root/.orbitrc:

ORBIIOPIPv4=1
ORBIIOPUNIX=0

Then, I can actually see "gedit" in the main window.

This bug should remain open until a proper fix is committed.
