If you do want to install from source better build and install the debian package instead of running setup.py manually. For example
$ debuild binary
$ sudo dpkg -i ../onboard*.deb

Often all you need may be a version from our snapshot PPA though. Those are more likely to be usable than random revisions of trunk too.
