I finally fixed my problem on WUBI and separate 11.10 install partition by adding kernel options to GRUB, ie.
acpi=off noapic nomodeset

Apparently my rig suffers from a regression on ACPI handling and the ATI
Radeon Express 200 motherboard video, especially in the Linux Kernel 3.x
strain.
