OK, I've done more testing as of 1/1/11. You can download the source from the developers' home page:
http://mielke.cc/brltty
and after you unpack it you locate the file brltty.in. This is the generic configuration that "make install" would have put in your /etc directory if you'd built from source. So rename this file to brltty.conf.generic and put it in your /etc directory manually. Then edit it and save the result as brltty.conf and it will not be necessary or useful to run the broken configure script.
Note that brltty.conf can be very short and still work. Mine reads:
braille-driver ts # TSI
braille-device serial:ttyUSB0 #First USB-To-Serial Adapter
That's all I needed to have brltty work with my setup.
Remember that if you have a USB display it can be auto-detected,
therefore brltty doesn't actually need to consult a brltty.conf,
therefore this bug will not be an issue for users with USB Braille
displays.
