Greetings tech board members,
We have a topic from bug 1585362 [1] that has been requested to be reviewed
& resolved by the tech board.
Backstory is that we are wanting to promote community use of unity8 on the
desktop form factor to increase dogfooding & generally promote unity8 as
the replacement for unity7.
Unity8 as a desktop experience is installed via a package named
unity8-desktop-session-mir. Believing that many folks will continue to use
Xenial/16.10 as it is LTS, today upon installation they experience the
unity8/mir (and other related sw) releases circa April 2016. Instead we
desire users to experience the latest and greatest unity8/mir platform by
adding the stable-phone-overlay ppa as part of the installation of this
package. And to have that installation experience be a single shot (rather
than having an additional step of adding repositories)
To address concerns around package policy, the stable-phone-overlay ppa is
the official delivery mechanism for all of our mobile form factors, so any
software landing in this ppa has been tested by Canonical engineering and
Canonical QA. All of the software in this ppa technically backed by
Canonical, this is not unknown third party software.
Also, the ppa is named stable-phone-overlay but should just simply be
stable-overlay. We are driving a shift in thinking within Canonical, we are
delivering high quality software on all form factors - for experience on
both desktop and mobile devices. So there is some additional soft cultural
benefit here for engineers building out the unity8 experience.
Please let me know which tech board meeting date this will be discussed.
I realize there is one very soon (like an hour from now), but wasn't sure
of how late topics could be added.
Thanks for the help.
