It isn't installed by default on Lucid either. I had to install it.
Does glslideshow still recognize the xscreensaver configuration?
I guess if you have root (which you kind of need to install
xscreensaver), you could also do something like:
mv /usr/shared/backgrounds{,.bak}
ln -s /home/username/Pictures /usr/shared/backgrounds
