My understanding is that, although touted as a lighter weight
alternative to GNOME, XFCE isn't all that light.  In fact, on my system
it consumes about the same amount of resources as does GNOME.

LXDE, OTOH, /is/ pretty light weight.

On the gripping hand there are even lighter weight choices such as 
blackbox, openbox, IceWM, etc.

Of course, none of those end with buntu so no one really wants them.
