This (and the rest) is interesting stuff, and I must confess, it
slightly worries me. I wish I could play more, but since 10.04, the
NBR launcher no longer runs at all on my newest, highest-end notebook.

You are concerning me a little here. I am not a huge fan of GNOME, I
just dislike it less than any of the alternatives. I do love vertical
panels and dislike horizontal ones, and since Unity offers that, I had
high hopes, but what you describe is putting me off a little.

Perhaps I will revive my idea of building an Ubuntu remix with
WindowMaker and GNUstep as the desktop. :¬)
