The future of Unity in Ubuntu

So we all know there's quite a bit of controversy surrounding
Canonical's decision to use Unity in the upcoming 11.04 release and
there are good arguments on both sides it seems. From the emails I've
read from Alan Pope, we'll all be able to avoid Unity if we want by
choosing another login type and that's a good thing. But what about long
term? Personally, I don't have a lot of technical arguments against
Unity but, rather, purely aesthetic. I just don't really care for the
way it looks and don't really want it as my desktop.
But how long with Canonical support the different login types? Is 11.04
a test run to see how Unity goes over for an eventual 'Unity only'
desktop? Right now, aside from all the technical considerations I'm
reading about, that's my concern. Anyone know?
Thanks,
Anthony
