I've tried giving both Unity and GNOME Shell a real try and find that
both have a lot of promise, especially for the, um, I-ified among
us who prefer icons to actual reading. The inter face(s) are nice and
easy for everyone if a little cumbersome for those who read
well/quickly.
I do believe that /that/ is the something that Ubu devels know; that
the main populace /and/ main Ubuntu user is dumber every day.
I understand that the recent fad is, for want of a better term, dumbing
down the interface and I can see that it is a logical extension of the
GUI 'dumbing down' the command line or the mouse 'dumbing down'
keyboard usage, and that the newer interfaces are, therefore, /really/
easy-to-use; they are just quite restrictive to the way I'm used to
working, too.
I've given them a try, understanding that they are works in progress
and allowing for that in my evaluation, I hope.
I don't like either. I much prefer the regular DE interface of GNOME
and LXDE. Give me a nice clean background image on the desktop with no
icons or panels, a pop-up panel at top or bottom with icons of my most
used programs, a button for a full text-only menu and a terminal. Then
I'm a happy little camper. Old-fashioned, I guess.
