GNOME 3 is not shipped in Ubuntu 11.04; the user needs to explicitly
install a PPA to use GNOME 3. Eg. unless you actually manually ran:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
...then you are /very/ unlikely to be running GNOME 3 accidentally!
